What Do I Collect?

I've had a couple of people ask, "How do you know what to collect?" or "How do you know what to get?"
Honestly, I have no idea. Some comics are easy to figure out because there's a bunch of covers, the comic is bagged, or it features a lot of hyperbolic claims on the cover like, "In this issue...Everything changes!"
My best advice would be to get the comics that feature the characters, stories, artists, writers, etc that you enjoy. I mean, you're going to be holding onto those comics for a while, they might as well be something you enjoy having in your possession.
I bought Birds of Prey #8 in 1999 not realizing it would have the first kiss between Nightwing and Barbara Gordon. I just liked the overall concept behind the series and thought it was worth picking up. No where in my thinking was there, "In 25 years, this issue'll be worth $60." I just liked Birds of Prey.
